Exactly the dawn of Japanese improvised organ-based psychedelic progressive rock! (I believe 'another' dawn of Japanese organ-based psych-prog should be The Happenings Four.)
Their core storm gets started with the second track Running Shirts Long ... don't be deceived by the beauty of Hiro's keyboard solo in the short opening Love St. ... each instrumental solo gets exploded heavily and rampantly. And please carefully listen to Hiro's keyboard play especially - although his solo play goes forward at a moment on the latter part, basically Hiro should support the other solos with his strict (and deep) rhythm on the background. Their terrific heavy improvisation on the middle part absolutely, absolutely reminds me Acid Mothers Temple Speed Guru's exploded guitar solo in the song Acid Takion. Makoto Kawabata might be much influenced by Hiro's improvised heavy keyboard play (here's a difference of instruments between them though) I imagine? Kimio Mizutani's crazy guitar solo can make their sounds more aggressive, and Hiroki Tamaki's sharp-edged electric violin can season their style with extremely dry and bitter soundspice. Just in the song can we feel such a greatness of all instruments, all players.
Anyway dart a glance around - in this album is flute-based soft and graceful fairy-tale song like When She Didn't Agree and Yum, a short instrumental track Love T with plaintive violin sounds blended with solemn keyboard ones, or a jazzy freaky flexible jam session Happy, Sorry. And another peak of this album is, I'm sure, the miracle suite Fish Sea Milk / Fingers Of A Red Type-Writer. Based on such a weird keyboard rumble, Kimio's crushed guitar, Hiroki's keen electroviolin, Nozomi's loud flute, Kenji & Hiro Tsunoda's deep rhythm section can fall one upon another. We cannot close our mouth and close our eyes till the end of Me And Milk And Others, the song characterized as a slow percussion and violin inferno.
A great stuff, able to be defined as one of the dawn(s) of Japanese Progressive Rock. Recommended!

JIMMY SOMERVILLE

     

    Somerville est né et a grandi à Glasgow. Il est doté d'une voix de haute-contre, s'apparentant à la tessiture d'un ténor aigu dans la dénomination moderne. Homosexuel et militant d'Act Up New York, il s'affirme comme un homme de gauche qui milite pour la défense des Droits de l'homme.

Carrière

Il a cofondé le groupe Bronski Beat en 1983, qui commença à engranger les hits dans les classements britanniques de meilleures ventes. Le plus gros succès de Bronski Beat est Smalltown Boy et l'incontournable Why? (en), qui furent écrits en réaction à la persécution d'un jeune homosexuel dans une ville de province, et fut choisie pour une publicité vantant de la Peugeot 205 en 1990. Jimmy Sommerville quitte Bronski Beat en 1985 et fonde The Communards, avec Richard Coles, un pianiste de formation classique, premier prix de Conservatoire. Plusieurs de leurs enregistrements furent des succès commerciaux, dont une reprise de Don't Leave Me This Way de Thelma Houston qui resta quatre semaines numéro un dans les charts, et devint la plus grosse vente de 45 tours au Royaume-Uni en 1986. Elton John dira : « Techniquement et musicalement, c'est le meilleur groupe actuel avec Dire Straits ».

Il participa également aux chœurs dans la version des Fine Young Cannibals de Suspicious Mind, qui fut classée dans le top 10 du Royaume-Uni.

The Communards se séparèrent en 1988 et Jimmy Somerville lança sa carrière de soliste. Il eut un certain succès entre 1989 et 1991, et chanta également sur le second projet Band Aid à la fin de 1989. Mais après la sortie d'un dernier titre Run From Love (une reprise de ce qui aurait dû être le dernier simple de Bronski Beat, jamais sorti en raison de son départ du groupe), Jimmy Somerville quitta le devant de la scène et n'enregistra pas pendant plusieurs années.

Il revint en 1995 avec un album Dare To Love, puis un autre, intitulé Manage The Damage sorti en 1999 et Root Beer paru un an plus tard (Ce dernier n'étant qu'une compilation de remixes et de faces B de titres de l'album précédent). Son quatrième album solo Home Again orienté vers la musique de danse est sorti en 2004. En 2009, paraît un album acoustique, Suddenly Last Summer, uniquement constitué de reprises, enregistré durant l'été 2006 en Australie avec Andrew Worboys. Cet album est publié sur CD en 2010. Toujours en 2010, sortie le 20 octobre en téléchargement uniquement et seulement pour la France, la Belgique et le Luxembourg, d'un EP de quatre titres intitulé Bright Thing EP. Les quatre nouveaux titres, très orientés vers la musique de danse, ont été produits par Jimmy Somerville et John Winfield (déjà producteur de deux titres de Home Again en 2004). La promotion du EP est assurée sur les radios par le titre Overload remixé par Felix Gauder.

En 2011, il collabore avec le duo électro Scratch Massive sur leur album Nuit De Rêve où il interprète la chanson Take Me There. Un second EP, Momentum EP est sorti cette même année, suivi d'un troisième, Solient EP, en 2012. Les trois proposent 14 nouveaux titres et 9 remixes, soit l'équivalent d'un nouvel album et des singles qui l'accompagnent.
